Google announced a sweeping reorganisation of its artificial intelligence leadership on Wednesday, placing one of the field's most prominent figures in a new executive role while promoting from within to steer Google DeepMind through the next phase of AI development. Hassabis's expanded role

Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and longtime head of Google DeepMind, is stepping down from daily operational leadership of the lab. He will become chair of Google DeepMind and take the title of Alphabet's chief scientist. In his expanded role, Hassabis will continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, the Alphabet unit dedicated to AI-driven drug discovery, while also advising on strategic questions around artificial general intelligence. Pichai said Hassabis's new position would allow him to focus on long-term scientific breakthroughs and the responsible development of advanced AI systems.
