A new trend is reshaping the entertainment industry in China: the licensing of human faces for use in AI-generated content. Much like how photographers license stock images, individuals can now upload their facial data to platforms such as ActID and New Claw, enabling AI creators to generate realistic characters for short dramas, advertisements, and other digital productions. Contributors have reportedly earned between $15 and $700 through these platforms, according to reports from Rest of World.

For studios, these marketplaces offer a streamlined alternative to traditional casting and shooting. Instead of organizing a full production crew, renting locations, and managing actors' schedules, they can simply license a face and deploy AI tools to make that likeness speak, move, and perform as any character. The contributor gets defined payment terms, but once the files leave the platform, no agreement can fully guarantee that every buyer will adhere to the usage limits. This creates a tension between the promise of efficient content creation and the risk of unauthorized exploitation.

How does renting a face work

ActID, one of the leading platforms, reportedly has around 800 registered users, including roughly 300 people who have licensed their likenesses. Creators pay between 99 and 500 yuan (roughly $14 to $70) per episode for the right to use a particular face in AI-generated content. The platform takes a 10% commission on each transaction. Meanwhile, New Claw allows contributors to upload their own images and set a minimum licensing price of 500 yuan (about $70) per image. Buyers can then incorporate those likenesses into AI projects covered by the standard agreement.

The distinction from traditional stock photography is significant. A stock photo captures one expression in one setting, offering limited versatility. In contrast, a licensed AI likeness can play a recurring character across multiple episodes, adapt to different emotional states, and even be modified to age or change appearance. This gives buyers far more creative freedom — but it also gives contributors many more places to monitor for misuse. A face may turn up in a project the contributor never intended to support, and tracking unauthorized use across the vast landscape of Chinese microdramas is a daunting task.

Why does AI need so many faces

China's appetite for AI-generated entertainment is creating an insatiable demand for new faces. The microdrama market has exploded in recent years, with platforms producing thousands of short-form series to capture the attention of mobile audiences. Figures from the China Netcasting Services Association suggest that AI was used in more than 95% of the 128,000 microdramas released during the first quarter of 2026. At that scale, traditional production methods simply cannot keep up. Studios need characters they can license and put to work quickly, without the complexities of scheduling and payroll.

AI-generated actors also offer cost advantages. A single face can be reused across multiple productions, reducing the need to pay actors for each appearance. The technology can generate expressions, lip-sync to dialogue, and even perform actions based on text prompts. This has made AI a central tool for studios looking to maximize output while minimizing overhead. For contributors, one photo session could lead to an unusually long acting career — minus the trailers, uncomfortable press tours, and the grind of auditioning.

The model also opens doors for people who might never have considered acting. Anyone with a smartphone and willingness can upload their face and start earning. It democratizes access to the entertainment industry, but it also raises questions about the long-term value of one's digital likeness. As AI technology continues to evolve, a facial dataset licensed today could be used to create content far more sophisticated than what was originally envisioned.

Can you get your face back

Chinese law provides some protections. The Personal Information Protection Law requires consent before biometric data can be processed, and the Civil Code prohibits fabricating someone's likeness without permission. Face-licensing platforms add contracts and technical restrictions intended to keep buyers within agreed uses. However, enforcement is messy. The Guangzhou Internet Court has handled around 700 AI-related disputes over three years, including cases involving face-swapping, unauthorized use of likenesses, and copyright infringement.

One major challenge is that once a digital file leaves the platform, the platform has limited control over how it is used. A buyer might resell the likeness, use it in pornographic content, or apply it in political advertising — all violations of typical contracts. Platforms can blacklist violators and pursue legal action, but the process is slow and resource-intensive. Individual contributors often lack the financial means to sue large studios or international buyers.

Another layer of complexity comes from the fact that AI-generated content can be modified almost infinitely. A face can be merged with others, aged, or animated in ways that the original contributor never consented to. Detecting these modifications requires sophisticated tools, and many platforms do not actively monitor for misuse. Some companies are experimenting with watermarking and blockchain-based tracking, but these solutions are not yet widespread.

Anyone tempted to license their face to AI should look beyond the upfront fee and examine how the platform tracks unauthorized use. A contract can define who has permission to use your likeness, but it cannot make every rogue version disappear. As the technology continues to advance, the legal frameworks governing digital identities will need to evolve as well.
